Dubrovnik (Italian: Ragusa), is a Croatian city on the Adriatic Sea coast positioned at the terminal end of the Isthmus of Dubrovnik. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations on the Adriatic, a seaport and the center of Dubrovnik-Neretva county. The patron saint of the city is Sveti Vlaho (Saint Blaise), whose statues are seen around the city. He has an importance similar to that of St. Mark the Evangelist to Venice. One of the larger churches in city is named after Saint Blaise. The city boasts of many old buildings, such as the Arboretum Trsteno, the oldest arboretum in the world, dating back to before 1492. Also, the third oldest European pharmacy is located in the city, which dates back to 1317 (and is the only one still in operation today). It is located at Little Brothers monastery in Dubrovnik. Stradun or Placa (Stradone or Corso) is the main street of Dubrovnik, Croatia. The limestone-paved pedestrian street runs some 300 metres through the Old Town, the historic part of the city surrounded by the Walls of Dubrovnik Dubrovački trubaduri – Ulicama moga grada.

dubrovnik.inyourpocket.com Stradun is the unofficial name for Dubrovnik’s main street Placa that joins the two main entrances to the Old Town at Ploče in the east and Pile in the west. The name comes from the Italian “strada”, meaning “street”. With its shining limestone flags and the uniform baroque buildings that line it, it is itself one of the best known sights of Dubrovnik. It’s the place people bump into and chat with friends on their daily business, and dress up for a stroll in the evening or at coffee time. en.wikipedia.org Dieter “Didi” Senft (born 1952 in Reichenwalde, Germany) is known as the Tour de France devil or El Diablo. Since 1993, he has been seen in the Tour’s many stages wearing his red devil costume and painting trident symbols on the road some miles before he appears. Senft attributes the inspiration for the costume to German cycling announcer Herbert Watterot who called the last lap of local criterium races, “the Red Devil’s Lap.” He is also an inventor who has created over 100 bicycles, including the largest in the world. He is listed in the Guinness Book of Records. During multi-day stage races he often travels ahead of the race itself in a custom-decorated camper vehicle, picking various locations for the race to pass by. He is also a regular attendee at important single day races, such as the spring classics and world championships. During the 2006 edition of Tour of Switzerland, Didi Senft painted his signature trident on the road the day before the competitors came by his door. But later that day the Swiss police arrived and said it was illegal and that he must either pay a fine or go to jail. He was also forced to remove the painting from the road. He was again in the spotlight at Euro 2008 when he rode through Klagenfurt in his specially created “Football Bike” prior to the Germany vs Croatia Match.

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Split, Croatia by TravelPod blogger Mattad titled “Next Tour: Croatia Sailing”. TravelPod is a company of TripAdvisor™. Mattad’s travel blog entry: “I had survived. After three consecutive overnight ferries totaling 44 hours plus 4 hours of buses and half an hour of trains I had made it from Santorini to Split. Split was to be my only night on land in 11 nights. It was to be the first of many Croatian spots that blew me away. From the very friendly locals, to the amazingly preserved cities and fortifications, epic coastlines to the awesome food, what more could one want? My time in Split should have consisted of a nice relaxing night as it was my first bed in four nights. Instead I had a sweet evening checking out the city by night with an englishman and two american guys, which turned into a few more by the end of it. The following morning was to be the start of my Sail Croatia adventure with TopDeck. I was amongst the minority on the boat with a mere 6 guys to 23 gals and about 90% of everyone being from Australia. This was a pleasant change from the likes of engineering (maybe not the Aussie thing though). The ratio made sense really, with the Sail Croatia being sold out many months in advance and for the most part guys being last minute, what else was going to happen? The only reason I had a spot was because I booked it before I left, so way back in April and even then I only just got a place.” Read and see more at
